Bluefish Win 2 to Take 2nd Straight YBL Title
West Roxbury (BNN): Game 3 of the Championship Series shifted South of the City, as the Bluefish returned home to West Roxbury to face Malden, up 2 games to none. The Game 3 matchup was once again a pitching show, with Malden's Adam Del Rio facing off against West Roxbury's Kevin Graham. The 2 pitchers faced each other earlier in the year, with Del Rio and the Bulldogs coming out on top by a score of 4-1. The Bluefish would have their chances early on against Del Rio, but they could not push anything across. To the 7th inning, after Del Rio pitched 6 innings of 1 hit ball, the Bulldogs turned the game over to their closer Jay Wisner with a 2-0 lead. Wisner proceeded to walk the leadoff hitter Al Becker. Pete Oggeri would then hit a ground ball to third that Malden's Tom Englehardt bobbled, then threw high to first, pushing runners up to 2nd and 3rd. Leadoff Hitter Nick Vardaro then came up and hit a ground ball that was eaten up by the wet-thick grass at Billings, allowing Vardaro to beat it out for an infield single to make the score 2-1, with runners on 1st and 3rd and 0 outs. After a Vardaro steal of 2nd base, Chris Santosuosso hit a sacrifice fly to Center Field, advancing both runners while tying the score at 2. Moments later, the game took an unusual and volatile twist. The runner on 3rd, Vardaro, decided to try and steal home to win the game (certainly wasn't called for by the Bluefish bench). Vardaro slid into catcher Eugenio, who held the ball for the 2nd out. But the slide was considered questionable by the Malden catcher, who then threw Vardaro down, resulting in both benches clearing. No punches were thrown, even though after the fact, there was a claim of a punch thrown at the Bluefish's Bobby Foote, and with the rain getting heavier and heavier during the inning, it was the right time for the umpires to call the game right there. With the score tied 2-2, the game would be suspended with 2 outs in the Bottom of the 7th. Brighton (BNN): After raindrops, bench clearing brawls, and a lot of rain, Game 3 of the Championship resumed on Monday Night at Rogers Park. After stranding runners in scoring position in the 7th, 8th, and 9th innings, it was Pete Oggeri reaching on an error with 2 outs in the 10th that helped break the 2-2 tie and lead the Bluefish to a 3-2 win and a 3-0 series lead. Ian Titcomb pitched all 3 innings of the completion for the win, giving up 2 hits and 0 runs. Twenty minutes after completing Game 3, the Bluefish took the field in hopes of winning a 2nd straight YBL Championship, and they would not end the night disappointed. Bobby Foote, named Playoff MVP, hit a 2 run Triple to Center Field off of Jason Paul to break a scoreless tie in the 3rd inning, and propelled the Bluefish to a 2-0 win on Monday Night at Rogers Park, to win Game 4 and sweep the best of 7 series. |
