2009 YBL Awards Announcement
The Yawkey Baseball League of Boston has recently announced the 2009 YBL Season Awards and the Bluefish were represented on a few different levels. Nick Vardaro, the Bluefish slick-fielding Shortstop, received his first YBL Gold Glove award, given to the best fielding player by position. John Young and Matt Dannenhoffer were both awarded with spots on the 2009 YBL Rookie Team for their efforts. Skip McCarty was the recipient of multiple awards, including Manager of the Year as well as receiving the Franchise of the Year awards.
Below is a rundown on all of the Bluefish Baseball Club award recipients at the YBL Banquet.
Skip McCarty -
Manager - Bluefish Baseball Club Skip and the Bluefish have had an impressive run over the last 2 seasons. The team has combined for a 66-19-2 record while winning two consecutive Championships. Over five seasons in the Yawkey Baseball League, the Bluefish have compiled a record of 132 wins, 63 losses, and 4 ties. After the 2009 season, Skip was named to the Yawkey League Board of Directors as a Member at Large.
Nick Vardaro -
SS - Bluefish Baseball Club Nick Vardaro returned to the Bluefish after playing 2 seasons of Independent League Baseball, including his final stop with the Brockton Rox. Nick solidified the Bluefish defense and gave the Bluefish some added speed on the basepaths. Throughout the 2009 season, Nick made defensive plays that made you shake your head. In October of 2009, Vardaro has enlisted in the United States Army. We wish him luck and to be safe on his journeys. John Young - RHP - Bluefish Baseball
Club John Young joined the Bluefish pitching staff on recommendations from fellow CMASS resident Anthony Leonelli. He enjoyed a four year baseball career in the Atlantic 10 with the Fordham Rams. Upon returning home from his senior year in school, Young initially worked out of the bullpen, in efforts to stretch him out and potentially become the 4th starter on the Bluefish pitching staff. He was spectacular in his 4 August starts (2 playoffs), going 2-0, while giving up only 1 earned run in 20.2 innings pitched. Taking the mound in Game 2 of the Semifinals, with the team down 1 game to none, Young pitched his best game of the year, a 3 hit complete game shutout win over the Brighton Brewers.
Matt Dannenhoffer -
RHP - Bluefish Baseball Club "D-Hoff" as he goes by on the Bluefish, was a blessing in disguise for the team in 2009. Dannenhoffer joined the Bluefish right at the start of the season, after completing his season with Wentworth. He would establish himself as the Bluefish ace, once Chris Sandini left to compete in the Hawaii Summer League. By season's end, his numbers were as good as anyone's in the league, going 7-1 (including 3-0 in the playoffs), while only giving up 9 earned runs in 65 innings pitched. He was nominated on the 2009 YBL Ballot as a candidate for League MVP.
Chris Santosuosso -
CF - Bluefish Baseball Club 2008 brought the rightful recognition of one of the most outstanding players in the Yawkey Baseball League, when Chris Santosuosso was named the Yawkey League Most Valuable Player. Just like every other season he has played for the Bluefish, Suazz was the catalyst for the Bluefish offense. When all was said and done, Santosuosso finished the 2008 campaign with a .408 batting average, with 5 Home Runs and 36 RBI. Chris also received one of the three Silver Slugger OF awards, given to the best hitting outfielders in the Yawkey Baseball League, along with teammate Al Becker. Santosuosso sustained a torn ACL after the 2009 season, and is scheduled to have surgery in December. We hope that Chris has a successful surgery and a quick recovery, as the Bluefish cannot afford to lose it's all-time greatest hitter in team history. Al Becker- RF - Bluefish Baseball
Club The veteran Al Becker has been nothing but a stable offensive threat out of the 2 hole for the Bluefish. His 2008 season ranked amongst his best in career, and resulted in his being named a 2008 Silver Slugger OF in the Yawkey Baseball League, awarded to the Best Hitting Outfielders in the league. Becker would amass his career highs in Runs Scored (37), Hits (49), Home Runs (2), RBI (27), and BA (.380). The Bluefish Record Book is covered with Becker accomplishments, as he ranks amongst the all-time Bluefish leaders in just about every offensive catagory.
